Lone Peak’s offense exploded Friday afternoon in its 15-7 win over Skyridge. The 15 runs were the most the Knights had scored in the last 10 games.

After a low scoring bout on the diamond Thursday that saw Skyridge get the 3-0 victory, the Falcons looked poised to get a win for the second day in a row. Skyridge quickly got on the board, taking a 1-0 lead into the second inning.

The score held going into the third, when the Knights’ bats came alive. Lone Peak broke the game wide open, scoring seven runs and putting the visitors in a tight spot for the rest of the evening.

Lone Peak’s offensive outburst did not come as a surprise to its fourth-year head coach Jeremy Berg. “Our bats are all up to us,” he said. “If we play the game right and we take the right approaches and go up to the plate not just swinging, but with a purpose, any pitcher is going to have to work hard to get us out.”

Skyridge experienced that firsthand, struggling to find any way to stop the Knights’ bats. The Falcons went through pitchers like they were on a carousel, putting six different players on the mound.

The third inning was highlighted by left-handed batter Crew McChesney’s bomb over the right field fence that brought teammates Chris Billings and Parker DeYoung in for the scores. The home run capped off the inning, giving the Knights a 7-1 lead.

Lone Peak put Skyridge in another jam during the fifth inning, adding six more runs to its tally. Senior catcher Gage Easton got the scoring underway with a solo home run. The Falcons’ nightmare seemed never-ending as the Knights cycled through one batter after another.

Berg hopes the batters will continue piling up for Lone Peak as the season moves on. “Hitting is contagious. Right now, we are riding a little bit of momentum,” he said. “We are hoping to keep that momentum and (our) focus going.”

The Knights won two of three games over the Falcons this week, after losing all three of its matchups against Pleasant Grove the week before.

Berg pointed out a few reasons why his team’s performance has improved after starting their first week of Region 4 play 0-3. “We are looking to win one game at a time,” Berg said. “Our bats came alive and that propelled us to the wins. We are starting to get more healthy, and that is helping the team.”

Lone Peak will look to continue improving its region record when it goes up against Westlake three times next week.

Skyridge will face a tough test next week in its three matchups against American Fork. The Cavemen have an unblemished record and have outscored Region 4 opponents 68-11.

Both series will begin at 3:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
