Utah Sen. Mitt Romney started trending over social media Wednesday night during President Joe Biden’s speech
Utah Sen. Mitt Romney had a somewhat viral moment Wednesday as Twitter pointed out how the Utah senator was seen during President Joe Biden’s speech to both sessions of Congress.
Biden spent most of the night laying out a progressive plan for the future of America. He talked about the novel coronavirus pandemic and how the United States needs to unite and work together. But much of the speech also talked about Biden’s plan for the economy, calling for a $15 minimum wage, lower drug prices for ailing families and the need to tax more wealthy Americans.
As Biden spoke, social media took screenshots of Romney, who was caught sitting in the back of Congress. His eyes appeared closed.

Others pointed out that Romney likely didn’t approve of many of Biden’s statements about labor unions, taxes and the direction of the United States. Specifically, Twitter users pointed to moments where Romney appeared to react negatively to Biden’s speech.

Romney’s office did release a statement about Biden’s speech, though, in the minutes after it ended.
“It’s hard to live within a budget and much easier to spend money like there’s no tomorrow. Unfortunately, the President has a lot of things he’d like to do, but he’s spending like crazy. In his first 100 days, he has proposed six trillion dollars of new spending. That is a modern record,” Romney said in a statement. “To put that in context, $6 trillion is about four times our total federal budget. That is an amazing amount of money, and it has the potential of jeopardizing our kids’ future and burdening them with decades of interest costs.”
He added, “When you get down to the kinds of policies that unite the country, the President says he wants unity, but it’s impossible to unify America if you’re only appealing to the liberal wing of your own party. So let’s get back to the job of bipartisan governing. I hope he will do that, and we Republicans are ready to work with him.”

Still, Biden called for the country to work together and unite through bipartisanship. So even if Romney fell asleep, at least he was there for Biden.
