At Liberty Park on Thursday, the Eagles advanced all of their players to Saturday’s semifinals to claim first place in the team standings with 10 points.
The Skyline boys tennis team is happy the state tournament is finally here. It gives them something else to focus on, rather than trying to find a place to practice.
The Eagles won state in 2019, but their chance to repeat ended when the season was canceled last year due to the coronavirus pandemic. At the same time, Skyline High started its long-awaited reconstruction process. The players and coaches agree that the campus is in chaos as the school year nears its end, with piles of dirt sandwiched between old buildings, new buildings, and new baseball and softball fields.
The school’s tennis courts were among the first things to be ripped out and coach Lisa Coleman-Taggart said they will be the last facilities to be created, which may not be until 2025. In the meantime, the team has had to practice a mile away at the Olympus Hills Courts, which are also popular among the local residents.
“Sometimes we have to go and scoop them out of there,” she said.
The locals haven’t always been happy, but Skyline has apparently had enough practice to remain one of the state’s top 5A teams. At Liberty Park on Thursday, the Eagles advanced all of their players to Saturday’s semifinals to claim first place in the team standings with 10 points. Region 6, in fact, fared well overall as Brighton earned eight points and Olympus six. Orem followed with five points, followed by Park City (4).
Skyline emerged on top because it was successful on a couple of risky ventures. After all of its players won their first-round games on a breezy, warm morning, Skyline’s Ethan Green and Jack Hinkle of Woods Cross played one of the most impressive matches of the day before Green won, 7-3, 7-6 (2). Also, the Eagles’ Gunnar Wooler couldn’t get Skyline or tourney representatives to budge on a special request, which forced him to leave the tourney and return to the school to take an exam. While his coaches watched the clock intently, he managed to complete his academic requirements and return to Liberty Park with time to spare and then handily won his second-round match.
“That was a relief,” Coleman-Taggart said. “We were sweating a lot with that one.”
Brighton advanced all three of its singles players on first-day action as Hardy Owen, Parker Hopkin and Davis Turley won handily. There were at least two competitive doubles matches: The Bengals’ team of Owen Hopkin-Ford Owen defeated Alex and Zach Eyring of Bountiful and Olympus’ Milo Headden-Oscar Smith def. Hudson and Harrison Roney of Maple Mountain 7-6 (3), 6-7 (9), 6-3.
