It was a night of celebration for Park City, as the Miners girls lacrosse team defeated the Waterford Ravens 17-11 to win the Division A championship Friday night in Layton.
With state playoffs last year being canceled last year because of COVID and the Miners losing to Herriman in states the prior year, having the opportunity to celebrate a championship was something the team had been focused on for a long time.
“We always had states on our mind and that was something that we were always working towards,” said Miners head coach Mikki Clayton. “Every win we came away excited but then we were also ready to get back to work. There’s always little things that you can fix in your game and things that you can do to get better.”
The Miners were led by team captain Kendall Keblish and Samantha Riely, who together accounted for 12 of the team’s 17 goals. Keblish scored six of her seven goals in the first half.
After securing the Division A championship, Clayton had nothing but praise for her dynamic and explosive senior, Keblish.
“Kendall was huge. She is such a great team leader. She really rallies the girls and always knows what to say to her teammates,” Clayton said. “I think they feed off her energy and Kendall hates to lose, that’s an attitude thing and I think all of the girls feed off of that.”
After starting off the game with four quick goals, the Miners let their guard down and allowed the Ravens to score four unanswered goals of their own. Those defensive lapses were one of the very few things that Clayton saw as a negative on the night.
“Our defense worked together as a unit. We stressed all season long that they had to play good solid team defense. There were a couple times where our defense broke down but our goalie Sadie came up huge for us. The defense made up for the mistakes and they did what they had to do,” said Clayton.
While the first half was full of explosive offensive goals and possessions from both sides, the second half slowed down quite a bit with more penalties and time-wasting possession on the part of the Miners.
While Waterford did not have a whole lot to celebrate, one bright spot was the play of Jaimeson Meyer, who scored eight of her team’s 11 goals.
While Park City took home the Division A title, earlier in the evening American Fork and Bingham secured the Division B and C championships, respectfully.
