The Silverwolves and Miners took care of business as Riverton picked up a 10-0 mercy rule win over Weber and Bingham took down Herriman 7-5
Region 3 dominated the 6A softball tournament, with No. 1 Riverton, No. 2 Bingham, and No. 3 Herriman being joined by No. 5 Weber in Wednesday’s semifinal. The Silverwolves and Miners took care of business as Riverton picked up a 10-0 mercy rule win over Weber and Bingham took down Herriman 7-5.
With multiple players out due to COVID-19, Weber miraculously found itself one of the final four teams standing. The Warriors’ luck ran out Wednesday afternoon, as they lost to the Silverwolves for the second day in a row, being outscored 21-1 in those games.
Junior pitcher Kaysen Korth was outstanding for Riverton, throwing a no-hitter for the Silverwolves. Korth faced only 16 batters, coming one batter shy of a perfect game after hitting freshman Kendall Strasburg with a pitch.
Riverton head coach Katelyn Elliott praised her pitcher’s impressive performance.
“Kaysen’s phenomenal on the mound,” she said. “We’re fortunate enough to have two D-I pitchers on our team and she just showed it today. Her change up was spot on and she had batters off balance. That’s exactly what her job is as a pitcher.”
Korth was aided by a barrage of Silverwolves’ hits. The top seed needed just four innings to come away with nine singles, one double and two home runs. Both long balls were hit by Korth’s fellow pitching ace Chloe Borges.
Borges hit a deep bomb into left field in the first, bringing in two baserunners and giving her team a 3-0 lead. Her next at bat came in the third, yielding a similar result. This time Borges went the distance over the centerfield fence for a solo shot that extended Riverton’s lead to six. The Warriors intentionally walked the hard-hitting senior in her last at-bat.
Two of Riverton’s Region 3 rivals sparred into the seventh on an adjacent field. Herriman looked to force a doubleheader with Bingham as the two schools faced off for the third time this season – the Miners won both previous contests.
The Mustangs led nearly all game long, yet the Miners never panicked.
“I don’t feel like we had to say a whole lot,” Bingham head coach Mikki Jackson said. “(Our girls) have this internal ‘we’re going to get there, we’re going to get there.’ They don’t have a sense of hopelessness at any point. They always have that sense that they can come back. (Herriman) is a tough team to come back on.”
Down a run in the bottom of the sixth, the Miners took the lead for the first time during a two-out rally. Bingham starting pitcher Shelbee Jones got things going with a single to left field. Senior Emily Dority kept the inning alive, hitting a blooper over Herriman’s infielders. That’s when Averi Hanny came to the plate and hit a homer over the center field fence to put the Miners on top 7-5.
Before the game got underway Jackson informed Hanny, Bingham’s usual starting pitcher, that her role for the day was to hit the ball.
“She asked me where she would be playing,” Jackson said. “I said ‘your hitting. Your job is to hit.’ And she did.”
Hanny’s big hit advanced Bingham into the three-game championship series with Riverton beginning Thursday. The Miners will be looking for revenge — their only losses of the year came against the Silverwolves. Game 1 is set to begin at noon.
