High school track: Corner Canyon 4x100 relay team breaks state record again at BYU Invitational

One relay state record was broken, while two other Utah sprinters posted top 10 times in their respective 100-meter races heading into the home stretch of the season

The track was running fast at the BYU Invitational high school track meet on Friday afternoon.

One relay state record was broken, while two other Utah sprinters posted top 10 times in their respective 100-meter races heading into the homestretch of the season.

The two-day BYU Invitational features 86 teams from around the Intermountain region. In past years most of the finals races have been on Saturday, but this year there’s a mix of trials and finals on both days, and the sprinters took center stage on Friday.

Corner Canyon’s boys 4x100 relay team stole the spotlight again on Friday by breaking the previous state record for the third time.

The Chargers team of Cody Hagen, Noah Kjar, Cody Strong and Harrison Taggart ran a 40.68, a major improvement from the 41.25 state record time it posted at Davis High School back on April 17.

Hagen wasn’t done though. Later in the meet he posted the second-fastest 100-meter time in state history, running a blistering 10.52 to narrowly miss breaking the state record time of 10.47, which has stood since 1981.

Incredibly, Hagen didn’t even win the race. Zach Branch, a sophomore from Bishop Gorman High School out of Las Vegas, ran a crazy-fast time 10.33 in the final race of the day.

All nine runners in the boys 100-meter final ran under 11 seconds, which sets things up for a great Day 2 at the BYU Invitational with the 200 and 400 meters on tap later in the afternoon.

In the girls 100-meter race, Snow Canyon junior Kristin Cook ran a sensational time of her own, winning the race with a time of 11.92. Lehi’s Sarah Ballard was a close second in 11.97.

Cook’s time ranks as the ninth-fastest time ever recorded by a Utah sprinter.

Another notable performance belonged to Logan junior Milly Garren, who won the discus with a throw of 143’10.75, the best mark in Utah this spring.
