Beehive State sees 386 more cases and 4 more deaths Friday

More than 1 million Utahns are now fully vaccinated against COVID-19.

The 19,014 additional vaccinations the Utah Department of Health reported Friday means that 1,014,231 residents are considered fully vaccinated, which represents 31.6% of the state’s total population. A person is considered fully vaccinated two weeks after receiving the second dose of Moderna or Pfizer vaccine or the single Johnson & Johnson shot.

About 41.8% of Utah’s total population has now received at least a first dose of a vaccine. Among Utahns age 16 and older who are currently eligible to receive the vaccine, about 56.3% have at least a first dose and 42.6% are fully vaccinated, state data shows.

A total of 2,261,285 vaccine doses have been administered in the state and 2,707,493 doses have been shipped to Utah so far.

The benchmark also comes on the day the health department reported the fewest number of active COVID-19 infections since the fall. According to the data, there are now 7,973 cases of the disease considered active in Utah. The last time active infections were under 8,000 was in September.

The state reported 386 new coronavirus cases Friday, with four more deaths.

The rolling seven-day average number of positive cases per day is now at 349, according to the health department. The seven-day average for positive tests calculated with the “people over people” method is now 6.7%, while the rate when all results are calculated is 3.5%.

The number of tests conducted since Utah’s pandemic began is 4,718,711, up 11,311 since Thursday. Of those, 5,450 were from people who hadn’t previously been tested for COVID-19.

There are 137 COVID-19 patients currently hospitalized in Utah, including 55 in intensive care units, state data shows.

The four deaths reported Friday were:

  • A Kane County woman who was over the age of 85 and was not hospitalized when she died.
  • Two Salt Lake County men who were between the ages of 65 and 84 and were hospitalized when they died.
  • A Weber County man who was between the ages of 45 and 64 and was hospitalized when he died.

One of the deaths reported Friday occurred before April 1.

Friday’s totals give Utah 399,760 confirmed cases, with 16,323 hospitalizations and 2,223 deaths from the disease.
