Jonathan Tavernari recalled how a chance encounter in an airport with two then-Carolina Panthers coaches led to the offer
More than a decade ago, Jonathan Tavernari wowed BYU crowds with his athleticism and scoring abilities on the basketball floor.
Turns out the former Cougar could also catch the eye of an NFL coach or two.
Tavernari, the Brazilian who played basketball at BYU from 2006-10 before going on to a professional career overseas that lasted nearly a decade, shared a crazy story on Twitter that showed just how much his athleticism impressed coaches in another sport.
Late Monday, Tavernari recalled the details of returning to the United States and bumping into a pair of NFL coaches — one of them then-Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera, the other then-Panthers tight end coach Pete Hoener — during a layover. From that chance meeting came an offer to try out at tight end.
Here’s the full story from Tavernari:
Crazy story time:

May of 2013 I’m flying back to America and during a layover I’m sitting next to 2 guys who coach in the NFL. We start chatting. They tell me their stories and I tell them mine. They say their names are “Ron & Pete” and coach in Charlotte.

They search my name on YouTube to watch some highlights. They step away and talk to each other, make some calls, come back to me w/ their business cards & write their direct numbers on the back and say “We want you to come try out to be a tight end for our team.”

I try not to laugh hysterically, thank them and give “Pete” my cell. I get on a plane to Salt Lake and they to Charlotte.

I get home and tell my wife this but kind of brush off. I’m a basketball guy. Whatever. It’s summer time!

A few weeks later (late June-July) I’m at a BBQ w/ @OhJoeHenry & Pete calls me asking if I could make to a tryout the following week and I thank him for the time but politely reject.

I tell Joe who it was and show him the business cards.

Turns out it was Carolina Panthers head coach Ron Rivera and his tight end coach Pete Horner asking me to tryout to be a tight end for the Panthers!

I never called back or reached out to them. Moved on and kept playing basketball.
Can you imagine me a tight end @Chadlewis89???
