The high school sports yearbook: Who won state titles this year, and how they did it

When the 2020-21 Utah high school athletic season started, there were plenty of questions surrounding how play would occur amid the pandemic that was still fresh on everyone’s minds.

By the end of the year, though, athletes and coaches throughout the state found ways to keep their seasons going as more than 100 championships were handed out.

Here’s a look back at how those championships were won:

Class 6A

  • Boys golf: Lone Peak holds off late Davis charge to capture another 6A golf title.
  • Girls tennis: Skyridge dethrones Lone Peak as 6A champ.
  • Cross-country: Lone Peak repeats 6A girls title while Skyridge boys edge out American Fork.
  • Girls soccer: Davis gets redemption against American Fork, claims 6A title on Annie Haycock’s OT goal.
  • Volleyball: Lone Peak back on top of 6A after slipping past gritty Copper Hills in title game.
  • Football: Corner Canyon caps record-breaking 2020 season with 6A state title in dominant win over Lone Peak.
  • Boys swimming: A year full of firsts concludes with American Fork winning its first 6A state title.
  • Girls swimming: Youthful and grateful Lone Peak squad takes home 6A state title.
  • Boys wrestling: Pleasant Grove rolls to another state title, its 10th in past 11 years.
  • Girls wrestling: Westlake caps inaugural year of 6A girls wrestling with state title.
  • Drill team: Bingham repeats as 6A state champs.
  • Girls basketball: Fremont caps off undefeated season with a 6A state championship win.
  • Boys basketball: 6A’s seventh-seeded Darts end Davis’ 19-year title drought.
  • Girls golf: Davis rallies late — as in the last 4 holes — to win the 6A state title.

  • Cross-country: Springville overwhelmed the competition in 5A girls competition while Farmington edged on Timpanogos on the boys side.
  • Girls soccer: Emma Neff’s golden goal helps Olympus halt 24-year title drought with OT win over Bonneville.
  • Volleyball: Timpview edges rival Mountain View in five sets in 5A title game thriller.
  • Football: Orem shuts down rival Timpview in 5A championship to clinch a 4-peat.
  • Boys swimming: Olympus flexes muscles in convincing repeat 5A state championship.
  • Girls swimming: Olympus dominates 5A state meet, wins first state title in school history.
  • Drill team: Farmington captures second straight 5A state championship.

  • Volleyball: Earning every second, Union takes second consecutive state trophy.
  • Football: Juab edges Morgan in 3A title game for first state title in school history.
  • Boys swimming: Young but dominant, Judge Memorial rolls to 3A state title, its first in 16 years.
  • Girls swimming: Carbon 3-peats as 3A state champs.
  • Drill team: South Sevier captures eighth straight 3A state championship.
  • Boys wrestling: Juab adds another 3A state title to dynasty.

  • Girls soccer: Rowland Hall captures fourth straight 2A title with flurry of second-half goals.
  • Volleyball: North Summit nabs second 2A state title in 3 years.
  • Football: Beaver crushes Duchesne, repeats as 2A state champs.
  • Drill team: Enterprise captures long-awaited 2A championship.
  • Boys wrestling: Beaver wins first 2A wrestling title in school history.
  • Girls basketball: North Summit dominates, wins first 2A state title since 1986.
  • Boys basketball: Layton Christian coasts to 2A state title in big win over Enterprise.
  • Girls golf: Rowland Hall edges Beaver by 4 strokes to claim 2A state title.
  • Track: Kanab boys halt 38-year title drought, while North Summit girls continue 2A dominance with a 5-peat.
  • Boys soccer: Real Salt Lake Academy rebounds from semifinal scare with a statement win in 2A state championship game.
  • Softball: Enterprise uses a strong second inning to take 2A title.
  • Baseball: Beaver marches through one-loss bracket to 2A championship.

Class 1A

  • Cross-country: Adelaide Englestead’s dramatic finish helps Panguitch girls claim 1A title, boys title goes to Piute.
  • Volleyball: Valley holds off Rich to claim first state title in 35 years.
  • Baseball: Piute wins third straight 1A title.
  • Boys wrestling: Panguitch secures second consecutive 1A state championship.
  • Girls basketball: Piute nips Valley in girls’ 1A championship, 44-40.
  • Boys basketball: Panguitch picks up school’s eighth title in 1A title win over Wendover.
  • Girls golf: Rich holds off Milford, wins 1A state title.
  • Boys golf: Wendover claims first state title — in any sport — since 1996 with 1A golf win.
  • Track: Panguitch boys and girls sweep 1A state titles, including dramatic win for Panguitch in final event.
