Reports suggest the South African woman gave birth to 10 babies at once

A South African woman reportedly gave birth to 10 babies, setting a new world record, according to BBC News.

Gosiame Thamara Sithole and her husband, Teboho Tsotetsi, said they were surprised by the 10 children — decuplets — because ultrasounds showed they were giving birth to eight children.

“It’s seven boys and three girls. I am happy. I am emotional. I can’t talk much,” Tsotetsi told Pretoria News.

Did a woman really give birth to 10 babies?

A South African official confirmed the births to BBC News.

• However, another official said they had not seen the babies yet.

A family member told BBC News that the couple had 10 babies — five through natural birth and five through Cesarean section.

• Phumla Williams, the director general at Government Communication Information System, South Africa, said in a Twitter post that the births have yet to be confirmed.

There has been some debate about whether or not the births were real, according to The Indian Express. The Guinness World Records group plans to investigate the matter, BBC News reports.

What is the world record?

Nadya Suleman currently holds the record. Suleman, who is from the United States, gave birth to eight children — six boys and two girls — in Bellflower, California, on Jan. 26, 2009, according to the Guinness World Records.

However, a woman from Mali gave birth to nine babies in May 2021, according to NPR. She likely would have broken the record if Sithole hadn’t given birth to her children. The Guinness World Records does need time to verify the records.

• The babies were conceived through in vitro fertilization treatment. They were nine weeks early and had to be delivered by Cesarean section.
