The Utes beat out the Texas Longhorns and Clemson Tigers for his services
On Wednesday, new Utah Utes men’s basketball coach Craig Smith went on ESPN700 and said he expected to have more clarity about his roster for the 2020-21 season during the next week.
That turned out to indeed be the case. The Utes officially signed (well, re-signed) Minnesota transfer Both Gach on Friday after he announced his commitment Thursday, then about 35 minutes later, Illinois State big man Dusan Mahorcic announced on Twitter that he will be transferring to Utah as well.

The addition of Mahorcic is big for Smith from a number of standpoints. The Serbian is literally big at 6-foot-10 and 230 pounds, and he adds depth to the Utes’ frontcourt that they are lacking.
In addition, Utah beat out some big competition, as Texas and Clemson were among the other schools Mahorcic was seriously considering before Friday’s announcement. Texas in particular has been tremendous landing transfers this offseason with new head coach Chris Beard at the helm, including former Ute Timmy Allen.

As for Mahorcic’s credentials, he averaged 9.9 points, 7.2 rebounds, exactly one assist and 24.4 minutes per game last season as a junior for Illinois State.
Mahorcic played at two junior colleges prior to landing at Illinois State. Once Mahorcic officially signs, he will become the seventh transfer to join the Utes this offseason. The others are Gach, David Jenkins Jr., Bostyn Holt, Marco Anthony, Rollie Worster and Gabe Madsen.
