The Utah Democratic Party is mourning the death of the longest-serving female state legislator in Utah's history.
Former Rep. Beverly "Bev" White died at age 92 on May 24 in Taylorsville, according to her obituary.
The party remembered her as one of Utah's "greatest champions and trailblazers."
"A fearless defender of women's rights, Rep. White passionately served her community and Utah with dedication for 22 years in the Utah House of Representatives, becoming the longest-serving woman legislator in our state's history. Rep. White's immense impact on Utah Democrats, and our state as a whole cannot be overstated," party officials said in a statement.
Among her accomplishments while serving as a state representative from the 1970s into the 1990s, White held the position of chairwoman of the House Social Services Committee and sponsored the Equal Rights Amendment in Utah. She was also the first woman appointed to the Utah Board of Pardons, her obituary states.
According to Utah State University, White helped establish the Children's Justice Center in Tooele and worked for the Tooele Adult Probation and Parole Office until she retired at the age of 78.
Her family remembers her love for politics.
"Bev loved every aspect of the political spectrum. ... She was proud to be a Democrat and there has never been a moment in her life she hasn't loved this great country. An American flag has flown in her front yard for decades. The neighbors affectionately called her home 'The White House' at 122 Russell Ave.," her obituary states.
White also helped establish a satellite campus for Utah State University in Tooele. She received an honorary doctorate degree from the university in 2017, according to her family.
Her funeral took place on Friday morning.
