England’s football community has condemned the racist behavior of fans after Euro 2020 loss

England lost to Italy in the Euro 2020 Final on Sunday. Here’s what happened next

England’s Football Association condemned all racist social media attacks against the team’s soccer players, who were targeted with racist insults in the wake of England losing the Euro 2020 Final against Italy.

England players hit with racist abuse

BBC News reports that England players Marcus Rashford, Jadon Sancho and Bukayo Saka, who are all Black, were targeted with racist attacks on Sunday.

• The attacks came after England lost the Euro 2020 Final against Italy. The three players all missed penalty kicks during the penalty shootout at the end of the game, according to CBS News.

U.K. Prime Minister Boris Johnson spoke out against the attacks, BBC News reports.

• “This England team deserve to be lauded as heroes, not racially abused on social media,” he said.
• “Those responsible for this appalling abuse should be ashamed of themselves.”

England condemns racist behavior

The FA — which acts a governing body for all of soccer in England — issued a statement about the racist insults, condemning them entirely, according to Yahoo Sports.

“The FA strongly condemns all forms of discrimination and is appalled by the online racism that has been aimed at some of our England players on social media. We could not be clearer that anyone behind such disgusting behaviour is not welcome in following the team.

“We will do all we can to support the players affected while urging the toughest punishments possible for anyone responsible.”

The FA said it would seek out punishment for anyone engaging in racist behavior, too. And the FA called on social media companies to do more in stopping targeted attacks on their platforms, according to Yahoo Sports.

“Social media companies need to step up and take accountability and action to ban abusers from their platforms, gather evidence that can lead to prosecution and support making their platforms free from this type of abhorrent abuse.”
