Former BYU golfer Mike Weir ties for second at U.S. Senior Open; Former U.S. Open champ Jim Furyk wins his first senior major

Weir, the 51-year-old Sandy resident from Canada, closed with a 67 on Sunday to move up the leaderboard at Omaha, Nebraska

Mike Weir made birdies on four of his last seven holes and shot one of the day’s two best rounds at the U.S. Senior Open, but the Utah resident’s outstanding finish still wasn’t enough to pass Jim Furyk for the title.

Shooting a 3-under-par 67 on Sunday, Weir, 51, tied for second place with Retief Goosen of South Africa at 4-under 276 in the tournament at Omaha Country Club in Nebraska. The former BYU golfer was trying to win his first major championship for golfers 50-and-over after winning for the first on the PGA Tour Champions circuit in May.

Furyk won with a 7-under 273. He didn’t have a three-putt the entire tournament. He became the eighth golfer to win both the U.S. Open and the U.S. Senior Open.

Furyk, who won for the third time this year, fired a 64 on Friday to take control of the tournament.

After making pars on his first five holes, Weir made an eagle on the 543-yard par-5 sixth hole to get his round rolling. He would go on to make bogeys on holes 8, 10 and 15. His birdies came on holes 12, 13, 16 and 18.

The three other former BYU golfers in the field — Steve Schneiter, Stan Souza and amateur Eric Rustand — did not make the cut.
