Mike Weir makes the cut at U.S. Senior Open, but three other former BYU golfers struggle at difficult Omaha Country Club

Former BYU golfer Mike Weir is in good position to make some noise at the U.S. Senior Open golf tournament this weekend.

Weir, the Sandy resident from Canada, shot a 1-over-par 71 on Friday at Omaha Country Club in Nebraska for a two-day total of 1-over 141 and easily made the cut in the major championship for golfers 50 and over.

The three other former BYU golfers in the field didn’t fare as well. Sandy’s Steve Schneiter, amateur Eric Rustand of Tucson, Arizona, and 66-year-old pro Stan Souza of Honolulu, Hawaii, did not make the cut, which came at 7-over 147.

Schneiter added a 78 on Friday to Thursday’s 75 and finished at 13 over.

Rustand improved by six shots Friday, shooting a respectable 78 on the difficult, hilly course to finish at 22 over.

Souza struggled again after Thursday’s 89.

As for Weir, he’s trying to win for the second time this year, having won his first PGA Tour Champions event on May 2 in The Woodlands, Texas.

Weir’s round Friday included three birdies. But he made a double-bogey on the difficult 495-yard par-4 10th hole and added bogeys on holes 1 and 11.

Weir also had a double-bogey on Thursday, making a 5 on the par-3 third hole.

Jim Furyk shot a 6-under 64 on Friday to move into the lead at 4-under.
