With college football fall camps around the country slated to start next month, we’re pretty much in full forecasting mode at this point.
There are plenty of ways to try to predict how teams will fare, with measuring returning experience certainly one common way of doing so. To that end, ESPN’s Bill Connelly in April went through each of the 127 Football Bowl Subdivision rosters to determine returning production, and he did it again on Tuesday, taking into account summer roster changes.
Among schools in Utah back in April, Utah State and Utah were right next together with the 33rd and 34th-most returning production, while BYU was dead last. Utah State and Utah both had 83% of their production returning, while BYU had just 32% returning.
In Connelly’s update Tuesday, Utah State dropped to 37th, Utah fell to 53rd and BYU remained at 127th. According to Connelly’s studying, Utah State still has 83% of its production returning, Utah dropped to 80% and BYU rose to 35%.
Alright, I've officially scrubbed all the rosters, and I think I'm up to date on the portal, so...

2021 RETURNING PRODUCTION RANKINGS AS OF JULY 6.
* Typical national avg: 62.6%
* 2021 avg: 76.7%
Only 14 teams below the typical national avg this year. Crazy. pic.twitter.com/nam8od5Z6V
Above BYU at 126th is Northwestern with 39% of its production returning, but they are by far the two most inexperienced teams in the country, as Ohio State is at No. 125 but has 51% of its production returning.
Toledo leads the country with 97% of its production returning.
Of other interesting note, Connelly observed that the general average from 2014-2020 was 62.6%, but it’s up to a staggering 78.7%, surely in part to the fact that all players received an extra year of eligibility because of the pandemic.
