As the NBA’s offseason transaction window started to open late last month, Utah Jazz veteran Joe Ingles became a player who many thought could be on the trading block.
Even as recently as Tuesday, for example, The Athletic’s Marcus Thompson took a pretty deep dive into what a potential trade to the Golden State Warriors might look like.
But on Tuesday night, all the chatter might (or might not) have been put to bed by none other than Jazz owner Ryan Smith.
In response to a tweet Smith posted Sunday (he shares a motivational quote each Sunday, usually from a leader from The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints), a Twitter user wrote Tuesday, “Ryan; Donovan Mitchell, Michael Conley, Rudy Gobert, Rudy Gay, Hassan Whiteside, Bogdan Bogdonavich, Jordan Clarckson. I know you want one more HUGE piece, right? You have the money!!”
Clearly noticing that one notable name was not on that list, Smith quoted the tweet and wrote, “Ummm..@joeingles7 would be a good fit?”

Ultimately, Smith’s words are just words, and it’s entirely possible Ingles does indeed get traded at some point soon. On the other hand, does the word of the owner indicate Ingles’ safety?
According to Spotrac, Ingles is set to make about $12.4 million in the 2021-22 season, the final year on his current contract.
Ingles is at the Tokyo Olympics as he and Australia ready for a semifinal contest on Wednesday against Team USA.
