Fast-moving fire in Parley's Canyon up to 2,000 acres; mandatory evaluations underway

Residents of the Summit Park and Lamb's Canyon areas are being told to leave their homes, as a fast-moving fire in Parley's Canyon continues to threaten an estimated 2,000 structures in the area Saturday afternoon, authorities say.

Summit County Sheriff Martinez tweeted that Summit Park residents are being evacuated immediately. He added residents of the neighboring Pinebrook subdivision should also be prepared to evacuate as the fire continues to grow.

Park City Fire District officials said dispatchers were planning on sending a reverse 911 call to residents and that the Red Cross is working on setting up an evacuation center. Their firefighters were reassigned from the fire to "structure protection" in the Summit Park area.

The blaze, dubbed the Parley's Canyon Fire, was first reported around 1:30 p.m. It's still unclear what sparked the fire. Utah Fire Info, which is a joint venture of state and federal firefighting agencies, reported it had grown to over 2,000 acres by 3:30 p.m. They added it's threatening about 2,000 structures and power lines.

The Northern Utah Type 3 team was called to the fire along with more than a dozen ground and air vehicles from local, state and federal departments, according to Utah Fire Info.

The fire also has severe impacts on I-80 traffic. Utah Fire Info and multiple fire agencies reported that I-80 was closed in both directions; however, the Utah Department of Transportation reports one lane was open for eastbound traffic. Regardless, they tweeted that the fire was causing "significant delay" on I-80.

"Avoid the area and use an alternate route," the agency tweeted.
