The sizzle this offseason was that Bingham would unveil an explosive spread passing identity to assert itself in the upper echelon of an ultra-talented 6A field.

But in a 55-35 romp over Weber in the Miners’ opening game of the season, there was nothing but steak in the familiar Bingham smashmouth rushing attack.

“We know our strength and it doesn’t matter how you line up, it’s what you do with it. Really, the plan was to try to run the ball more than we were going to throw it,” Bingham coach Dave Peck said. “For putting a brand new offense in, something new for all of our kids, I thought it was a big success tonight.”

Bingham racked up seven of eight touchdowns on the ground, aiming several highly-touted offensive linemen downhill at Weber over and over again.

“We have a lot of DI commits on our O-line. They’re all big and that’s where our experience comes from,” Bingham junior quarterback Dallen Martinez said. “A lot of them know what they’re going to do. They make big holes and we make big runs.”

The Miners wasted no time getting on the board, as Martinez ripped off a 78-yard keeper up the sideline for a touchdown on the first play of the game.

“I was dreaming about that last night,” Martinez said. “First play, because we knew we were going to run that, I was like ‘I’m taking it. I’m taking it all the way.’”

On Weber’s first offensive play of the game, Bingham junior defensive lineman Ben Latai burst through and forced a strip sack fumble, leading to a Havea Fotu 4-yard scoring scamper to give the Miners a 14-0 lead.

Weber fought back with a 9-play drive featuring a potent mix of senior quarterback Jake Lindsay and senior running back Logan Payne before Payne punched in a 5-yard score to make it 14-7 with 10:52 in the first quarter.

Not to be outdone, Fotu added two more touchdowns — one rushing and one on a 15-yard screen pass — to give Bingham the 35-7 edge with 7:55 left in the first half.

In a tough spot, Payne put Weber on his back and bulldozed a Bingham defender on the way to a 34-yard score to shift momentum.

Junior wide receiver Abel Hernandez turned on the jets for a 30-yard score on a screen pass from Lindsay, and senior defensive lineman Aisea Moa took a Cody Lazenby pass 25 yards the other way for a pick six. Suddenly, the Warriors were within a touchdown, 35-28, heading into halftime.

Peck told his team to slow the first half’s frenetic offensive pace down and run the ball at the patented Bingham tempo, an adjustment that led to a back-breaking 16-play scoring drive that ate up five minutes and gave the Miners a 41-28 lead with 4:16 left in the third quarter.

“There was a point where they started coming back that it was like ‘uh oh,’” Peck said. “But we went in at halftime and I felt like made some adjustments. I thought the defense played really well in the second half.”

Martinez added his third rushing touchdown on an 8-yard run to the right side of the end zone with 6:25 left in the game to ice the victory.

Bingham has no time to rest, following up tonight’s victory with a gauntlet of a preseason schedule that includes Corner Canyon, Timpview and American Fork.

“Our goal is to go win every one of those games,” Peck said. “We’ll see what happens.”
