Fire crews reported minimal growth overnight on a wildfire burning in Parleys Canyon east of Salt Lake City that ignited Saturday.

But crews are expecting to face another tough firefighting day Sunday, Utah Gov. Spencer Cox said.

“Winds will pick up and it will be another difficult fire day,” Cox tweeted. “Evacuations will stay in place so that crews can work to protect property and build lines to stop the advance.”

Crews initially said Saturday the fire had grown to 2,500-3,000 acres, but said Sunday that it was closer to 1,500. Crews mapped the fire area again later on Sunday morning and found that the blaze has covered about 619 acres.

So far, no structures have been lost to the fire, authorities said. It remains 0% contained, and 120 firefighting personnel are currently assigned to the fire, authorities said.

There have been fewer human-caused wildfires than normal in Utah so far this season, so firefighting crews have been able to help with fires in other states, Cox said. Now, several crews are headed back to Utah to help fight the Parleys Canyon Fire, he added.

The blaze started Saturday afternoon when a vehicle with a bad catalytic converter spread hot particles along I-80 in the canyon and started the fire.

The community of Summit Park, as well as the nearby Pinebrook and Timberline subdivisions, were evacuated Saturday afternoon in Parleys Canyon. Lambs Canyon and Millcreek Canyon were also evacuated.

Businesses in the lower Pinebrook area will be allowed to open Sunday to provide services for residents, Summit County Sheriff Justin Martinez said.

The evacuations will remain in place Sunday morning, and could be in place until Tuesday, Martinez said. However, evacuated residents are being allowed to check in and out with deputies at the scene if they need to make quick trips to their homes, he said.

"If fire behavior changes, we will make decisions accordingly. Thank you to everyone for your understanding and support," Martinez tweeted.

Eight thousand people were evacuated Saturday, and only one person required shelter overnight, according to Cox.

“Thank you for taking care of each other,” he said.

Jordanelle State Park is closed for the day Sunday because firefighters will be using water from the reservoir to continue fighting the fire, according to the Utah Department of Natural Resources.

Fire officials reported that due to the current surge in COVID-19 cases, they are unable to accept food donations for the firefighters. If able and willing, monetary donations to Red Cross or to a local nonprofit would be appreciated, they said.
