Olympics roundup: Damian Lillard, USA basketball beat Spain in quarterfinals despite Ricky Rubio’s 38 points

Former Weber State star Damian Lillard and the USA basketball team beat Spain to advance to the Olympic semifinals, rallying after being tied at halftime.

Lillard had 11 points, four rebounds and four assists on 4-of-10 shooting. Kevin Durant led the United States with 29 points, four assists, two rebounds, two steals and a blocked shot. Jayson Tatum had 13 points, Jrue Holiday had 12 points and Zach LaVine had 10, making it five Americans that scored in double figures.

Former Utah Jazz guard Ricky Rubio has been one of the top scorers in the Tokyo Olympics, and he showed up in a big way on Tuesday, scoring 38 points.

Rubio also had four rebounds, two assists and a blocked shot. He shot 65% from the floor.

Spain was up 39-29 with three minutes remaining in the first half before a 14-4 run by the United States tied the game at 43 at halftime. A good second-half showing for the USA helped it avoid an early exit, as the United States outscored Spain 52-38 after halftime.

The USA will face the winner of Tuesday morning’s quarterfinal game between Argentina and Australia, featuring Jazz guard Joe Ingles, in the semifinals on Wednesday night.

Utah native Rhyan White earns silver medal after USA swimming finishes second in women’s relay

After two fourth-place individual finishes in the Tokyo Olympics, Utah native Rhyan White has earned a medal.

White will receive a sliver medal after the USA women’s swim team finished second in the women’s 4x100 medley relay. White did not swim in the final race, but still gets a medal because she was a part of the 4x100 medley relay where the USA qualified for the final, placing second in the heat. White swam first in the heat, which included Lily King.

Regan Smith, Lydia Jacoby, Torri Huske, and Abbey Weitzeil swam in the final for the USA. Australia claimed first with a time of 3:51.60. The United States was just 0.13 seconds behind with a time of 3:51.73. Canada won the bronze with a time of 3:52.60.

Jake Gibb retires as USA beach volleyball exit in round of 16

Utah native Jake Gibb — playing without his normal partner, Trevor Crabb, who is out due to COVID, — and replacement partner Tri Bourne lost in the round of 16 to Germany.

Germany’s Julius Thole and Clemens Wickler beat Gibb and Bourne 2-1 (17-21, 21-15, 15-11) to end Gibb’s Olympic run.

Gibb had 19 points — 16 came on the attack, with two on a block and one on a serve.

Following the match, the 45-year-old Gibb announced his retirement from Olympic play.

“I was just enjoying the moment, and I was just enjoying that stadium, the energy — just kind of taking it in one last time,” Gibb said, per the Associated Press. “I was just, I guess, letting it go, in a way.”

Taylor Sander, USA volleyball eliminated in group play

Former BYU volleyball player Taylor Sander and the USA men’s volleyball team was eliminated before the knockout stage for the first time since the 2000 Olympics.

Argentina beat the United States 3-0 (25-21, 25-23, 25-23) in the final game of the group stage.

Sander had seven points — six on the attack and one on a block.

The United States finished fifth of six teams in Pool B with a 2-3 record. Only the top four teams move to the knockout round.

Leilani Mitchell, Australia women’s basketball advance to quarterfinals

Former Utah women’s basketball player Leilani Mitchell and Australia beat Puerto Rico 96-69 to secure its spot in the quarterfinals.

Australia’s victory in the final group stage game placed it seventh out of 12 overall teams. The top eight teams advance to the quarterfinals.

Mitchell scored 12 points for Australia and had six assists, two steals and a rebound.

Australia will take on the United States in the quarterfinals tonight at 10:40 p.m.

Former Ute Kim (Smith) Gaucher and Canada just missed out on a quarterfinal berth, finishing ninth in the overall standings.

Eddy Alvarez, USA baseball knocked to repechage round after quarterfinals loss to Japan

Former Salt Lake Community College baseball player Eddy Alvarez and the United States lost 7-6 in extra innings to Japan, knocking them to the repechage round (losers’ bracket).

Alvarez went 1-for-4 with a single in the loss.

The USA was up 6-5 heading into the bottom of the ninth inning in the battle between the two undefeated teams, but a Yuki Yanagita groundout scored Seiya Suzuki from third to tie the game.

In the tenth inning, as each team started with men on first and second base per Olympic rules. the United States went down 1-2-3 without scoring a runner. Japan’s Ryoya Kurihara hit a sacrifice bunt to advance the runner, then Takuya Kai hit the game-winning single.

The United States will now have to win two consecutive games in the repechage bracket to advance to the gold medal game. If they lose either of those contests, they will play in the gold medal game.

The USA will play the winner of the Dominican Republic vs. Israel tonight at 9 p.m. MDT.
