Alex Smith will be back around the NFL this season.

The New York Post reports that the former Utah quarterback will be an NFL analyst for ESPN, starting this year — but not in a full-time role.

“For his rookie TV season, Smith will just be dipping his toes in the analyst game as opposed to taking on a full-time role,” Andrew Marchant of the Post wrote in the article. “If both sides like how it goes, it could lead to a larger commitment.”

Smith will appear on ESPN’s NFL shows like “Monday Night Countdown,” among other NFL content aired by ESPN, such as “NFL Live” and “Sunday NFL Countdown.”

Smith tried out to for a Sunday color commentary position for Fox and CBS, according to the article, but was not selected. Mark Sanchez was picked for the Fox position, while CBS will not fill its open position.

Smith, the No. 1 pick in the 2005 NFL draft, retired this offseason after a 14-season NFL career that saw him play for the San Francisco 49ers, Kansas City Chiefs and Washington Football Team. He was named the NFL’s 2020 Comeback Player of the Year after recovering from a harrowing leg injury to start in the NFL again.
