On Sunday after former University of Utah gymnast MyKayla Skinner won the silver medal in the vault individual finals at the Tokyo Olympics, she received congratulations from a very notable figure, both nationally and in the Utah Olympics scene.
Just before noon Mountain Time, Utah Republican Sen. Mitt Romney, who was the president and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee that was in charge of the 2002 Winter Olympics in Utah, congratulated Skinner on Twitter.
Quoting a tweet from Team USA that featured a video of Skinner talking about her medal, Romney wrote, “Congratulations to former @UtahGymnastics athlete @mykaylaskinner! Your incredible story proves that determination and grit pays off in the end. You make us proud.”
He ended the tweet with #TeamUSA.

In the 35-second video Romney quote tweeted, Skinner said, “Hey, guys, it’s MyKayla Skinner, your vault silver medalist. So cool! I can’t believe this happened. I just wanted to thank all my friends, family and fans for everything you have done. You guys have seriously been supporting me through it all, through the ups and downs.
“Thank you for never giving up on me and I know you guys all back home have been cheering and been so excited once the news came out that I’d be in the vault lineup, and you knew that I’d been wanting this so, so bad, so thank you all so, so much. I love you and all dreams come true, so don’t forget, never give up.”
Skinner then blew a kiss to the camera.
