A new date has been scheduled for the groundbreaking ceremony of the Pago Pago American Samoa Temple, The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints announced Tuesday in a news release.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the Pago Pago American Samoa Temple has been pushed back from its original date (Oct. 9) to a new date — Oct. 30.

Elder K. Brett Nattress of the church’s Pacific Area Presidency and a General Authority Seventy will preside at the groundbreaking ceremony. A presiding church leader for the ceremony was not assigned when the groundbreaking was first announced on July 27.

Attendance at the groundbreaking ceremony will be by invitation only.

President Russell M. Nelson announced the Pago Pago American Samoa Temple during the April 2019 general conference. The site location and exterior rendering for the single-story structure of 17,000 square feet were released in August of 2020.

The groundbreaking for another Latter-day Saint temple in the South Pacific — the Neiafu Tonga Temple — took place on Sept. 11.
