Senior quarterback back Boston Farmer had one rushing touchdown and two passing — including what ended up being the game-winner early in the fourth quarter — to lead the West Jordan Jaguars to a 20-14 victory against the visiting Riverton Silverwolves in a tightly contested and tense affair.
It took a while for the Jaguars to get going, however, and it was actually Riverton who got on the scoresheet first. Late in the first quarter, Silverwolves quarterback Jake Meyers found Sau Tafisi on a short 6-yard reception in the end zone for the score.
It looked like West Jordan was going to get its first points of the game in the second quarter when Farmer threw a 41-yard bomb to wideout Carter Baldwin, setting the Jaguars up at Riverton’s 1 yard line.
The Silverwolves goal line defense, however, was up to the task, and after a couple of penalties forced West Jordan into a long 40-yard field goal attempt by kicker Payton Parry, which he missed.
The West Jordan defense came up with a fumble recovery on the Silverwolves very next offensive play, though, immediately sending its offense back on the field to give it another go for the end zone.
This time the Jaguars were successful and Farmer rushed it in from a short distance out, getting points on the board for the home team.
The Jaguars pulled ahead late in the first half when Farmer struck again, this time running it in from 4 yards out, making it a 12-7 score going into halftime.
Riverton took the lead again early in the third quarter on a 6-yard touchdown pass from Meyers to receiver Josh Jacobsen, but with nine minutes left in the game, Farmer again came to the rescue for West Jordan through the air by throwing a 30-yard pass to Baldwin for a touchdown.
The West Jordan defense then came up huge for the Jaguars late in the game on two separate occasions. First with 2:19 left and Riverton threatening to score, cornerback Gabriel Remy got his hands on the ball and intercepted a Riverton pass in the end zone.
Then with a minute left and the game on the line, freshman safety Ian Matau made arguably the biggest play of the game by getting another interception for the Jaguars in the end zone to seal the victory.
West Jordan head coach Ron Halbert, who took over the program in May, has been speaking to his players constantly about believing in themselves and in the team as a whole. That was never more evident than during this game.
“We’re trying to get these guys to believe in themselves. It is a big thing that we have been doing in getting them to believe in each other, believe in yourself and believe in the coaches. It’s clear these guys are believers,” said Halbert.
West Jordan remains undefeated on the season and will next face Herriman at home. With the loss, Riverton’s record drops to an even 3-3 on the season and it will next play Copper Hills on its home turf.
