Cougars ranked No. 10 in both Associated Press, Coaches polls

BYU is back in the top 10.

The Cougars are ranked No. 10 in both the latest Associated Press and USA Today Coaches polls released Sunday, following a crazy weekend of college football.

There was plenty of shakeup in the polls after nine ranked teams lost Saturday.

That included five teams — Oregon, Notre Dame, Florida, Arkansas and Mississippi — ranked in front of BYU in the AP poll that lost Saturday, and another, Texas A&M, that lost and was ranked in front of the Cougars in the Coaches poll.

That allowed the Cougars to jump three spots in the AP poll and five in the Coaches poll.

BYU (5-0), coming off a 34-20 victory over Utah State, hosts Boise State next Saturday. The Broncos are 2-3 after losing to Nevada.

This is the second straight season BYU has been ranked in the top 10. The Cougars entered the top 10 of both polls in October 2020.

While the top two remained the same in both polls — Alabama at No. 1 and Georgia at No. 2 — there’s a new top 5. Iowa is No. 3 and Penn State No. 4 in both polls, with Cincinnati, a 24-13 winner over Notre Dame, at No. 5 in the AP and Oklahoma, a 37-31 winner over Kansas State, at No. 5 in the Coaches.

Oregon, despite losing to unranked Stanford, stayed in front of BYU, at No. 8 in the AP poll and No. 9 in the Coaches.

Arizona State, which beat then-No. 20 UCLA, is the only other Pac-12 team in the rankings this week, jumping back into the polls at No. 22 in the AP and No. 25 in the Coaches.
