Telford was 3A medalist with an 8-under, the only golfer to shoot under par

There were some nervy moments for Morgan’s boys golf team out on the course during Day 2 of the 3A state tournament on Thursday, but it wasn’t the only team feeling the pressure.

Scores at Oquirrh Hills Golf Course were up for over half the teams in the 3A field, but the cushion Morgan created during the opening round was more than enough to carry it to a fourth straight 3A state championship.

Morgan’s team score was 16 strokes higher on Thursday than Wednesday, but was still good enough to hold off runner-up Grantsville as the Trojans finished with a 602 team score, with Grantsville close behind at 611.

“It was a hard day today. The course was tougher and the boys were nervous,” said Morgan coach Dennis Peterson. “I’m really proud of all the boys, the seniors stepped up the last two days.”

Morgan’s only two seniors, Tanner Telford and Caige Toone, both placed in the top 10 to lead the Trojans. Freshman Lance Loughton was one stroke out of the top 10.

Telford ran away with the 3A medalist honors, shooting an even par 72 on Thursday after torching the course with a 64 on Wednesday.

Tanner previously won medalist honors as a sophomore and is one of just 17 golfers in any classification over the past 60 years to finish as a two-time medalist.

“Tanner is on a different level. For as long as I’ve been coaching high school golf he’s still to this day the only player I can’t read. I have no idea where he is at score wise by his emotion or action, whereas every other boy on the team you can tell by their posture, they show their emotion,” said Peterson.

Despite shooting 8-under over the two days, Telford said he didn’t really putt that well. What he did do well was take advantage of the Par 5s. He was a combined 6-under on the eight Par 5s this week.

“I went low, but honestly my putter wasn’t working both days. I just kind of made the ones I needed to and then took care of the par 5s,” said Telford.

As happy as Telford was about claiming medalist again, the team title was his bigger goal.

“It feels good. I’m super excited to win as a team — the individual is kind of a bonus. It’s good to win that, but I wanted to win as a team to go four straight, so super happy to do it with a team,” said Telford, who said he expects to announce the college he’ll be golfing for within the week as he finalizes his decision.

Last year’s 3A medalist, Carbon’s Bode Salas, was the runner-up at Oquirrh Hills as he was steady both rounds with a 71 and 73.

Union’s Tytan Birchell and Ogden’s Coltin Powell each shot a two-day 146 to tie for third, while Layton Christian’s Hugo Padilla finished all alone in fifth with a 147.

For Morgan, Toone’s eighth-place finish was just as critical to the four-peat as Telford’s sparkling 8-under. Toone had never played golf until after last season. He proved to be a very quick study though and spent countless hours at the course this summer working on his game.

He shot a 74 on Wednesday and then a 78 on Thursday, and the Trojans needed every one of those strokes for the four-peat.
