Behind the poised quarterback play of Jackson Brousseau, the Lehi Pioneers improved their record on the season to 6-2 by blowing out the Alta Hawks at home 49-14.
Led by five touchdown passes on the night by Brousseau, the Pioneers found success on both sides of the ball as well as the special teams.
“It was a really good game. I thought we brought it all week long in practice and it really showed out on the field tonight,” said Brousseau. “The coach put together a really great game plan and we just wanted to send a message to the state that we’re no joke.”
It took a while for Lehi’s offense to get going, however, with 35 of the 49 points coming in the second half of the game.
It was Alta who struck first with a 29-yard touchdown reception by Maika Kaufusi from quarterback Ethan Jackson. The Hawks held the lead into the early stages of the second quarter, and that’s when Lehi’s offense settled into the game and never looked back.
Brousseau connected with Grayson Brousseau on a short 8-yard touchdown reception to tie the game up. Lehi took the lead with five minutes left in the first half on a 2-yard run by Helaman Ofahengaue, and the Pioneers would go on to hold a slim 14-7 lead heading into the break.
The Pioneers then scored on the first offensive possession in the second half when running back Isaac Mill sped up the field 29 yards for a touchdown.
Then midway through the quarter, Jackson Brousseau found wideout Isaac Dayley on a 40-yard bomb down the sideline for another touchdown, helping to pad the lead.
Brousseau added to his stats on the night by throwing a 16-yard touchdown pass to receiver Kaleb Moore. That score increased the Pioneers’ lead to 35-14, putting the game out of reach for Alta.
With 4 minutes left in the third quarter, Lehi’s special teams unit decided it wanted to contribute the cause when Kadiyon Sweat caught Alta’s punt and zigzagged his way 60 yards up field and into the end zone, putting more points on the board for the home side.
Lehi head coach Ed Larson was visibly thrilled with his team’s effort on the night and felt that they executed the game plan in every aspect.
“Alta is a really great team. They have had great momentum the last several weeks,” said Larson. “I just challenged our kids to hit them in the mouth early and establish our kind of play, and I feel like our kids in all three phases of play did that.”
Larson also raved about the performance of his junior quarterback and feels like thing are clicking at the right time for his team.
“We have a really tough stretch in our schedule where we have to play Alta, Timpview and Orem,” Larson said. “Jackson did exactly what I hoped he would do tonight, which is to keep his eyes downfield, and the offensive line for the first time in a long time really gave him some consistent protection that allowed him to move.”
With the victory, Alta improved its record to 6-2 while Alta dropped to 4-4.
