High school girls tennis: Green Canyon secures 4A state title a day early in dominant display during Day 1 of state tourney

Green Canyon went a perfect 10-0 during Friday’s opening day of the 4A state tournament at Liberty Park, and in the process already clinched the 4A team title regardless of what happens in the five championship matches Saturday morning at 9 a.m.

The Wolves finished third at state last year, but a year later left little doubt about who the most dominant program in the state is this year.

Green Canyon collected 15 team points with its 10 wins on Friday, with Crimson Cliffs in second place with eight points and Desert Hills in third with seven. Neither team has enough participants in Saturday’s championship matches to overtake the Wolves.

Two of Green Canyon’s singles players and both doubles teams won their quarterfinal and semifinal matches in straight sets, but one needed a third set to march into the final in what proved to be one of the best matches of the day.

Green Canyon sophomore Emma Murri edged Crimson Cliffs sophomore Mandy Beckstrand 6-4, 3-6, 6-4 to advance to the third singles final.

At first singles Green Canyon freshman Bailey Huebner advanced to the first singles championship match with a pair of straight-set wins. She’ll face region foe Erika Olsen of Bear River in Saturday’s final.

At second singles, Green Canyon’s Halle Kendrick advanced to the finals and will face Crimson Cliffs’ Cami Stanger.

At first doubles, Green Canyon’s team of Alice Wilkinson and Olivia Phillips will face Crimson Cliffs’ team of Gabby Hafen and London Wunderli in the championship.

At second doubles, Whitney Matheson and Bailey Speakman of Green Canyon will face Desert Hills’ team of Taylee Anderson and Tessa Fielding.
