What is WireShark?

WireShark is an open source tool that allows to analyze
network packets, which allows to capture data packets
flowing through the network, to present them in a simple way and
understandable.

WireShark can be considered as a Swiss blade, given
that can be used in different circumstances such as
diagnose network problems, security operations, and
protocol learning.

Benefits of Wireshark

1. Support for several protocols.

Supports a wide variety of protocols from TCP, UDP, HTTP,
to GSM, MSN, BitTorrent, etc.

2. Friendly user interface

Interactive graphical interface that helps analyze packets
captured. In addition to many advanced filtering options or
export packages.

3. "Live" traffic analysis.

You can capture data "live" by flowing through the network cable and
generate a report of the information on these protocols.

4. Open source project.

Has the contribution of about 500 developers.

How does Wireshark work?

The process of sniffing with Wireshark it can be divided into three phases.

1. Collection

Defines the network interface to promiscuous mode and thus
captures the raw binary data flowing in the network.

2. Conversion.

The bits of binary data collected are then converted into
a "comprehensible" form. Packages can also be
re-assembled based on their sequence.

3. Analysis.

Involves the analysis of the captured and re-assembled data.
Involves identifying the type of protocol, the communication channel,
port number, etc. At a more advanced level you can also
analyze the headers of the protocols for better understanding.
