ANTELOPE ISLAND STATE PARK — Members of the public are invited to watch volunteer wranglers round up bison during the annual fall event on Saturday, Oct. 26.
The roundup aims to help ensure the continued health of one of the nation’s largest and oldest public bison herds.
Riders will set out at 9 a.m. from Fielding Garr Ranch and move the herd north. Visitors can watch from the east side road, as well as witnessing the final push into the corrals from a viewing area at White Rock Bay.
Beginning at 10:30 a.m., food will be sold near the corral area, and there will be educational information and activities. Food sales are cash-only. Participants should bring a camp chair or blanket for seating.
According to park officials, the roundup is usually completed between noon and 3 p.m.
Once the bison have been rounded up, they’ll be allowed to rest for several days before they receive individual health screenings that include checks for pregnancies, parasites and other issues. The bison are also given a small external computer chip, which serves as a permanent ID that stores their health information.
Once the bison are checked, they are either released back onto the island or kept in the corral where they are later sold in a public auction to help keep the herd at manageable levels.
Antelope Island State Park is located approximately 41 miles north of Salt Lake City. Take Exit 332 off I-15, then drive west on Antelope Drive to the park entrance gate. The park is 7 miles west of the entrance gate across the Davis County Causeway.
The entrance fee is $10 per vehicle, up to eight people. The senior citizen entrance fee is $5 per vehicle, up to eight people. Bicyclists, motorcyclists and pedestrians can get in for $3 per person.
