Fourteen were wounded and 17 lost their lives at the hand of the Parkland, Florida, shooter on Feb. 14, 2018. Following his message of condolence, President Trump urged the nation to take action.
The most obvious realization of this call to action comes in the form of red flag laws which allow family members and law enforcement officers to petition a judge to confiscate firearms from someone who may present a danger to themselves or others. Opponents of red flag laws are concerned with the lack of federal regulation and evidence in support of these laws. The absence of these poses a threat to the Second Amendment rights of law-abiding gun owners. A panacea for gun violence does not exist, but federal regulations can be passed to ensure the protection of Second Amendment rights while allowing petitions to be filed.
Mass shooters exhibit warning signs prior to carrying through their deplorable deeds. No one is better equipped to recognize the flags than those closest to them. Family members must be empowered to speak out. If they do, they can save a life, or maybe even 17.
