WEST VALLEY CITY — A man has been arrested in the fatal stabbing of a man in West Valley City last week.
Beni Hautau, 19, is in custody for investigation of murder, West Valley police said Tuesday. He was arrested in connection to the death of 19-year-old Treyvon Stephens, who police said was stabbed and killed Thursday night.
Police said last week that Stephens had been hanging out earlier that day with two men before ending up outside a friend’s apartment complex, located at 4000 S. Redwood Road. The stabbing happened outside the apartment complex about 8:15 p.m.
After the stabbing, Stephens ran inside his friend’s apartment and collapsed, police said. First responders rendered aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
Hautau was taken into custody the day after the stabbing, after Salt Lake City police found him and another man in a car that had been reported stolen, according to charging documents.
Hautau was charged Tuesday in 3rd District Court with theft by receiving stolen property, a second-degree felony. West Valley police announced the same day that he is also being looked at in the murder investigation.
Hautau used the same stolen car he was found in to flee the scene of the stabbing, West Valley police said.
