NFL locals: Former USU linebacker Bobby Wagner — ‘the hardest working dude I know’ — becomes Seattle Seahawks’ all-time leading tackler

SALT LAKE CITY — Bobby Wagner has been a staple on the Seahawks defense since Seattle selected the former Utah State linebacker in the second round of the 2012 NFL draft.

Now, Wagner has etched his name atop the tackling category in the Seahawks’ record book.

The former Aggie became Seattle’s all-time leading tackler Sunday in the Seahawks’ 27-20 victory over Atlanta, the latest accolade in a storied career. He passed former Seattle safety and previous record holder Eugene Robinson with his second tackle Sunday and, with six tackles in the game, now has 989 career tackles.

Wagner took over the record halfway through his eighth pro season, while Robinson had 984 tackles in 11 seasons with the Seahawks.

“I’m honored and humbled, because there were a lot of players who came before me and made this organization what it is. To pass those guys is a blessing. I thank my teammates and my coaches; without them, I wouldn’t be so free to make those tackles,” Wagner said in his postgame press conference. “I’m honored for it, but we have a long way to go. I’ll appreciate it on the long plane ride home, but after that, we’ll move forward.”

Seattle coach Pete Carroll, who’s won a Super Bowl with the star middle linebacker, believes Wagner will never relinquish the record.

“He’s got plenty of years left,” Carroll said in his postgame press conference. “I don’t know how anybody could ever break that record. I think he’s going to own that forever. That’s amazing that he’s there already. It’s just a tribute to the unbelievable player that he is and his discipline, his toughness, his work ethic, everything. That’s an incredible number.”

Wagner, a four-time first-team All-Pro, has 75 tackles this season through eight games and has finished every season in his career with at least 100 tackles, with six of those years reaching 120 tackles or more.

“Hopefully that number continues to grow as I play here,” Wagner said. “I want to play here for a long time. I’m honored to be able to pass the guys who came before us. I’m grateful for my teammates who helped me before this. Just humble.”

Seattle quarterback Russell Wilson was in the same draft class as Wagner, and acknowledged the daily effort he sees from the team’s defensive captain.

“I think about his work ethic and all that he has put into this game, this franchise and this team, and I have been so happy to do it with him,” Wilson told seahawks.com. “He is a true pro. He is going to be a Hall of Famer. He is a great player, a great friend and a great captain. I am just glad I get to do it with him. We were talking in the locker room about how it is just the beginning for him, and we are all really excited about his accomplishments.”

K.J. Wright, a 2011 Seahawks draft pick who’s played every season at linebacker with Wagner in Seattle, effused praise on his fellow defender and friend.

“He’s the hardest working dude I know, just so consistent,” Wright told seahawks.com. “And that record’s going to get even bigger. It’s going to be fun to watch him just continue to dominate. It has been fun to watch on my end.”

On Sunday, Wagner also played a key role in a momentum-reversing play. After Seattle built a 24-0 halftime lead, the Falcons scored 11 straight third-quarter points and were driving again inside the Seattle 10.

On a first-and-goal play, though, former Utah safety and Seahawks rookie Marquise Blair stripped Atlanta running back Devonta Freeman of the ball and Wagner recovered at the Seahawks 1 before returning it to the 6-yard line.

“It was really big. I saw the ball, I think it was Marquise who got the ball out, and I just picked it up — but got tackled before I could take off,” Wagner said of the takeaway. “I was going to try (for a touchdown). Somebody had my legs, and then somebody started trying to grab the ball. I didn’t want to be the guy who fumbled it.”

  • Cody Barton, LB, Utah and Brighton High: Had two tackles, including a solo stop and an assisted special teams tackle, while playing five defensive snaps and 17 on special teams.
  • Marquise Blair, FS, Utah: Started at free safety and forced a fumble inside the Seattle 5 that teammate Bobby Wagner recovered early in the fourth quarter. He also had a team-high 11 tackles, including nine solo stops, while playing 69 defensive snaps and seven on special teams.
  • John Ursua, WR, Cedar and Westlake High: Not active for game.
  • Bobby Wagner, MLB, Utah State: Started at middle linebacker and recovered a fumble inside the Seattle 5 forced by teammate Marquise Blair in the fourth quarter. He also had six tackles, including a solo stop, and an 8-yard sack with Atlanta in Seahawks territory that helped lead to a field goal two plays later while playing all 80 defensive snaps for Seattle and six on special teams.

  • Daniel Sorensen, S, BYU: Had three solo tackles while playing 38 defensive snaps and 17 on special teams.
