Hans Pedersen, 3, looks over Union Pacific’s Big Boy No. 4014 steam engine in Provo on Wednesday. The engine, the world’s only operating Big Boy locomotive, is touring the Union Pacific system throughout 2019 to commemorate the transcontinental railroad’s 150th anniversary. The Big Boy’s return to the rails is the product of more than two years of meticulous restoration work by the Union Pacific Steam Team. The engine will be on display Thursday, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., at 400 E. 900 South. It will depart Provo at 8 a.m. Friday and travel through Nephi, Delta and Milford before stopping for the night. It will leave Milford at 9 a.m. Saturday and head to Modena, Iron County, before continuing to Caliente, Nevada. The engine, which weighs over 600 tons and is 132 feet long, roared into Utah in early May for the Spike 150 celebration.
