SALT LAKE CITY — A familiar name has reportedly emerged as a candidate to become the next head coach and/or general manager of Real Salt Lake.
The Athletic reported Thursday that RSL is planning to interview former Real player and head coach Jason Kreis for the MLS franchise’s vacant head coach and general manager positions.
Kreis is currently serving as head coach of the United States Under-23 team, as well as a technical member of the incoming MLS expansion club Inter Miami.
He was the first player in RSL history and suited up for the team from 2005-07 before taking over as head coach from 2007-13, replacing John Ellinger. During that span, Kreis led Real to the 2009 MLS Cup title as well as the 2013 MLS Cup final. He had a coaching record of 112-85-64 with Real Salt Lake and also has head coaching experience with New York City FC and Orlando City SC following his time in Utah.
Kreis was in Utah last month to celebrate the 2009 MLS championship with his former players.
Interim head coach Freddy Juarez is also being considered for RSL’s permanent head coaching position and if Juarez were to become head coach, the franchise would still be interested in Kreis becoming GM, The Athletic reported.
RSL is looking to fill both positions after Mike Petke was fired as the team’s head coach in mid-August after allegedly making a homophobic comment to a referee after RSL’s Leagues Cup loss against Tigres in July. In late September, RSL announced that the organization and GM Craig Waibel agreed to part ways. Petke filed a lawsuit against his former club, seeking $687,500 in salary, and the lawsuit stated Waibel planned to leave RSL at the end of the season.
