Utah will host the 2023 NBA All-Star Game. Here’s a reminder of what happened last time.

You may be wondering what city will host the NBA All-Star Game in 2023. Well, we now have an answer.

Salt Lake City — home of the Utah Jazz.

The Utah Jazz, team owner Gail Miller, Utah Gov. Gary Herbert and NBA commissioner Adam Silver announced Tuesday, Oct. 23, that Vivint Arena will play host to the 2023 NBA All-Star Game, bringing the mid-year NBA spectacle back to the Beehive State.

The Utah Jazz submitted a bid to host the game in either 2022 or 2023, as reported by the Deseret News.

Flashback: The Utah Jazz hosted the All-Star Game in 1993.

  • ”We’re very pleased to be bringing the 1993 NBA All-Star Weekend to Salt Lake City, where basketball fans have been extremely enthusiastic and supportive for the Jazz over the years,” said then NBA commissioner David Stern at the time, according to the Deseret News. “With a great new arena, the Delta Center, the showcase events, the . . . weekend should be one of our best ever,” he added.
  • ”We consider it a great honor and privilege that Salt Lake City has been selected as the site for the All-Star game,” said Utah owner Larry H. Miller. “On behalf of the Jazz organization, the city of Salt Lake and the state of Utah, we welcome the opportunity we have long desired, and we look forward to extending a special kind of hospitality to the NBA family and the world’s greatest athletes in 1993.”

Last location: The game was held at the Delta Center, which was a new venue at the time. The decision was announced on Dec. 9, 1991.

The game: Close to 20,000 people packed into the Delta Center to watch the game. The Western Conference won the game 135-132 following a huge 3-pointer from this guy named John Stockton, according to the Deseret News.

  • At the time, 15 of the 24 players for the game went on to become Basketball Hall of Famers. Nine of the 12 members of the 1992 Olympic “Dream Team” played in the game, as reported by the Deseret News.

MVPs: Meanwhile, fellow Utah Jazz star Karl Malone finished with 28 points and 10 rebounds. Stockton ended with 14 assists and nine points. They were named co-MVPs of the game, according to Deseret News.

Dunk contest: At the time, the NBA held the NBA slam dunk and 3-point contests, just like it does now. Miami Heat star Harold Miner won the event with a left-handed dunk following a 360-degree turn. Woof.

3-pointer: Meanwhile, the 3-point contest featured eight stars, including Reggie Miller and Terry Porter. But it was Cleveland’s Mark Price who won the competition.

Legends game: That’s right. There was a Legends Game last time Utah hosted the event. It included George Gervin, Calvin Murphy, Dave Cowens and Connie Hawkins as well as local favorites Zelmo Beaty, Ron Boone and Hot Rod Hundley, as reported by the Deseret News.

Nightlife? NBA players will likely be asked about their nightlife plans for Utah. And, as we know from previous reporting from this reporter and others, the subject of Utah’s nightlife has been an ongoing discussion in the media, which was mostly a result from when the Golden State Warriors came to town in the NBA playoffs in 2018.
