SALT LAKE CITY — The keyword here is “spooky.” Disfigured opera patrons, bloodthirsty barbers, big ol’ birds — this weekend has some definite fright nights.
If being scared isn’t your thing, there’s also the annual Scottish Festival (kilts!) and the Utah Jazz (not as many kilts!). Read on for details.
‘The Phantom of the Opera’ (1925)
We can’t think of a better movie for the Organ Loft. The original 1925 silent film “The Phantom of the Opera” will be there for two consecutive nights, featuring live organ accompaniment in all its glory. Actor Lon Chaney’s Phantom might be the spookiest looking Phantom of them all. Oct. 24-25, 7:30 p.m., the Organ Loft, 3331 S. Edison St., $5-$6 (801-485-9265, edisonstreetevents.com)
‘Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street’
It’s been 40 years since Stephen Sondheim’s “Sweeney Todd” first debuted on Broadway. To celebrate, Utah Valley University has partnered with the Utah Repertory Theater Company to bring the beloved musical back. Tony Award nominee Jeff McCarthy will play the title role here. Oct. 24-Nov. 9, 7:30 p.m. each performance day, with additional 2 p.m. matinee on Saturdays, Noorda Center for the Performing Arts, 800 W. University Pkwy., Orem, $8-$45 (801-863-7529, uvu.edu/thenoorda)

Scottish Festival and the Kirkin’ o’ Th’ Tartan
Yes, we checked that spelling multiple times, and we’re pretty sure it’s right. Salt Lake’s First Presbyterian Church brings its annual Scottish Festival and the Kirkin’ o’ Th’ Tartan back for another year. “Kirkin’ o’ Th’ Tartan” loosely translates to “Blessing of the Clans” — the Reformation Sunday service includes bagpipe music, hymns, and Psalms recited in Old Scots’ Tongue. The day before, the Scottish festival will have the Highland Dance competition, bake sale, and a special Cottage Pie Dinner. Oct. 26, 10 a.m.-7 p.m.; Oct. 27, 9 and 11 a.m., First Presbyterian Church, 12 C St., free (fpcslc.org/scottish-festival)
Tracy Aviary’s Halloween Hoot
Birds are spooky, yeah? The Tracy Aviary hosts the Halloween Hoot on multiple nights, which includes family-friendly Halloween festivities, crafts, costumes and, of course, birds. It’ll be a hoot. Oct. 26-27 and 31, 10 a.m.-2 p.m., Tracy Aviary, 589 E. 1300 South, $7.95-$11.95, free admission for children in costume (ages 12 and under) (801-596-8500, tracyaviary.org/events)
Utah Jazz vs. Sacramento Kings
The spirit of the ’90s is alive in Utah. The Utah Jazz will don their throwback late-1990s uniforms against the Sacramento Kings on Saturday night. Better yet, the court will also be a throwback — big purple mountain logos and all. Oct. 26, 7 p.m., Vivint Arena, 301 S. Temple, $15-$700 (801-325-2000, nba.com/jazz/tickets)
