PROVO — It’s been a long time since Provo has defeated Timpview in football — 30 years, to be exact, although some recent success has the Bulldogs optimistic heading into Friday’s 5A quarterfinal matchup.
For starters, Provo enters the game as the higher seed, despite losing to the Thunderbirds earlier this season. As for that defeat back on Aug. 30, it very much came down to the final minute, unlike most of the games during the 30-year stretch in which Timpview proved dominant on most occasions.
“There’s a lot of excitement with our student and the community that hasn’t been there for some time, I feel,” said Provo coach Tony McGeary on the heels of his team advancing to the quarterfinals after securing the Region 8 championship and the No. 3 seed in the playoffs. “Things are going well, and we’re just hoping to have them keep going well, but at the same time we’re working on keeping these kids grounded and focused on the task at hand.”
That task won’t be an easy one versus No. 10 seed Timpview, a team most believe entered the postseason under-seeded when considering their 9-3 finish and finish on top of Region 7, along with Orem.
“Timpview is a very good football team and we saw that firsthand earlier this year, although both teams aren’t the same teams now,” McGeary said. “We feel we’ve improved since we played them, but I’m sure they feel the same.”
Timpview coach Andy Stokes certainly agrees with McGeary’s characterization and likes what he’s seen from his team since the early season.
“We’ve been real good defensively throughout the year and really relied on our defense, but we’ve worked hard to get better on offense,” Stokes said. “We came in very young on offense, and we feel we’ve made good strides but need to continue those strides when we play Provo this week.”
McGeary also believes improvement on offense will be key in hoping to achieve Provo’s first win over Timpview since 1989.
“We obviously need to be better on offense than the last time we played Timpview,” McGeary said. “We need to prove as good as we were on defense, but have to put up more points than we did. I feel we’ve made some good strides on offense since that game, so we’ll see if we can keep that up.”
As for overcoming the 30-year losing streak to Timpview, McGeary isn’t focused on it and hopes his players aren’t either.
“We just have to focus on winning the game, no matter who the opponent is and what our history against them is,” McGeary said. “It’s an exciting time for us and we’re exciting to still be playing, but want to make sure we do everything possible to keep playing after this week.”
