Price man charged in connection with October death

SALT LAKE CITY — A man arrested for allegedly assaulting a man in Carbon County in October has now been charged in connection with the victim’s death, according to charging documents.

Rikhard Ivy Tallent, 72, of Price, was charged Friday in 7th District Court with criminal homicide by assault, a third-degree felony, and assault, a class B misdemeanor.

On Oct. 17, police were called to a report of an assault in Helper. Max Edwin Heino, 85, and his wife were sitting on their porch when Tallent walked through the back gate “yelling about his mailbox that had been removed from the Heino’s mailbox stand,” according to a police affidavit.

Tallent used to live next to the Heinos’ house, according to court records.

“Mrs. Heino then told me that Mr. Heino and Mr. Tallent started arguing, so she stood up and got between them to get her husband away from Mr. Tallent. When she got between them, Mr. Tallent pushed her back with his hand on the right side of her face,” the affidavit states.

Tallent also punched and kicked Max Heino, according to the affidavit.

Tallent was charged on Oct. 18 in Carbon County Justice Court with two counts of assault, a class B misdemeanor.

According to his obituary, Max Heino died Oct. 25 of a “short illness.” He served in the U.S. Army and “spent his life working in the coal mines of Carbon County,” the obituary stated.

On Friday, the assault case was transferred to district court and one of the charges increased to a felony because of Heino’s death.

Tallent’s initial hearing in district court is scheduled for June 8.
