Latter-day Saint temple prayer rolls have gone digital. Here’s how to submit names

Prayer rolls allow temple-goers to join together in faith and pray for those who are sick, bereaved or otherwise in need of heavenly support

SALT LAKE CITY — Latter-day Saints who want to put names on a temple prayer roll may now do so online, the First Presidency announced Tuesday.

Any member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints may now visit any temple’s information page and then click on the prayer roll link.

Frequent prayers are offered in the church’s temples for those who are sick, bereaved or otherwise facing challenges. Family and friends can place the names of those in need on prayer rolls so they become part of collective prayer in a temple, which is known in the church as the House of the Lord and a house of prayer.

Until now, putting a name on a prayer rolls was done during a physical visit to a temple and writing a name or names on a slip of paper.

Beginning today, church members may also enter a name on a temple’s prayer roll by using the “temples” section of the Member Tools app on an Android phone. The same service will be available on iOS phones beginning Sept. 1. The app will send all names entered to the selected temple, or if the temple is closed, to the nearest operating temple.

Temples continue to reopen after the church closed all of its 168 temples around the world during the pandemic lockdown in March.

The church will reopen another temple in Phase 1 (live marriage sealings only) and 20 more in Phase 2 (all live sealings and live endowments). That will bring the number of temples in Phase 1 to 139 while 68 temples will be in Phase 2.
