The Deseret News recently published an op-ed by Rep. Chris Stewart (“I’m defending an unpopular idea — America is good” Aug. 18). There are several things he wrote that are misleading or politically inspired. First was, “Why, then, are so many of my fellow Americans taking to the streets and the internet to express their hatred for our country and culture?” Stewart thinks protesting is un-American. Maybe growing up as a white American in predominantly white Utah insulates you from knowing that it was protesting that advanced the right to vote by women and Black Americans, created child labor laws and other positive improvements. His criticism of protesters indicates he is for the status quo, which is really what his whole op-ed is about. Most protesters are for positive change.
What truly got to me was the following from Stewart: “By nearly every measure — racism, care for our environment, the standard of living, protection of the middle class, human rights, education, and many more — we are improving. We salute the flag — never a king, party or faction.”
We are going in the wrong direction on the environment. We are in the midst of global warming, and Trump and Stewart do nothing to fight it. Our standard of living is suffering, the middle class is shrinking, and many in the next group down work two or three jobs to survive.
On many occasions, Stewart defends Trump’s bad behavior and lies. He ignores some of the Christian values I was taught. He is like Fox News, which has changed into a dedicated supporter of Trump.
