High school boys basketball: 2020 Class 5A team-by-team preseason capsules

Farmington, Olympus, Timpview and Maple Mountain open the season as the boys basketball preseason favorites in their respective 5A regions

After a multiweek delay because of COVID-19, the 2020-2021 high school boys basketball season gets underway this week for teams teams in 6A through 1A. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 5A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.

The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.

There are three new head basketball coaches in 5A this year: Dan Del Porto (East), Brandon Sluga (Hillcrest) and Quincy Lewis (Lehi).

Here are the 5A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.


Region 5

1. Farmington Phoenix

2020-2021 schedule

Head coach: Kasey Walkenhurst (third year).

2019-2020 record: 19-8 (tied for second in Region 5 with a 7-3 record).

2020 postseason: Lost to Timpview, 49-47, in the 5A semifinals.

Returning starters: 2.

3. Bonneville Lakers

2019-2020 record: 8-13 (fourth in Region 5 with a 4-6 record).

Bonneville will have a senior-laden team, but will be without returning All-Region point guard Jordan Citte, who suffered a torn ACL during football season. The Lakers will rely on returning starters Luke Dixon and Matt Tesch, as well as key contributors Jarom Strate, Chance Redd, Bosten Baur, and Carson Jones to shoulder the load in what should be a very competitive Region 5.”


4. Box Elder Bees

2020-2021 schedule

Head coach: Jace McKee (ninth year).

2019-2020 record: 11-12 (tied for 5th in Region 5 with a 2-8 record).

2020 postseason: Lost to Woods Cross, 62-50, in the 5A second round.

Let’s just let the kids play.”


5. Woods Cross Wildcats

Head coach: Jeff Jorgensen (third year).

2019-2020 record: 19-6 (1st in Region 5 with an 8-2 record).

3. Murray Spartans
