Layton, West Jordan, Bingham and Corner Canyon open the season as the boys basketball preseason favorites in their respective 6A regions
After a multiweek delay because of COVID-19, the 2020-2021 high school boys basketball season gets underway this week for teams teams in 6A through 1A. To prepare fans for the upcoming season, the Deseret News has put together capsules for every team in 6A. Every coach was invited to participate and submit information.
The region rankings are based on coaches preseason projections.
There is only one new head basketball coach in 6A this year: Duane Bourdeaux (West).
Here are the 6A teams and players to watch this upcoming season.
Region 1
1. Layton Lancers
Head coach: Kelby Miller (11th year).
2019-2020 record: 21-3 (second in Region 1 with a 12-2 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Fremont, 72-66, in the 6A semifinals.
Returning starters: 2

2. Davis Darts
Head coach: Chad Sims (seventh year).
2019-2020 record: 23-2 (first in Region 1 with a 13-1 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Fremont, 55-52, in the 6A championship.

2019-2020 record: 13-10 (fourth in Region 1 with a 7-7 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Layton, 78-59, in the 6A second round.

2019-2020 record: 6-16 (tied for sixth in Region 1 with a 3-11 record).

Head coach: Troy Anderson (eighth year).
2019-2020 record: 6-17 (5th in Region 1 with a 4-10 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Weber, 55-51, in the 6A first round.

6. Northridge Knights
Head coach: Andrew Olson (second year).
2019-2020 record: 4-18 (tied for sixth in Region 1 with a 3-11 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Lone Peak, 80-78, in the 6A first round.

2020 postseason: Beat Davis, 55-52, in the 6A championship.

We still have high expectations for our team. We will compete each possession every night.”
8. Clearfield Falcons
Head coach: Curtis Hulse (16th year).
2019-2020 record: 5-17 (tied for sixth in Region 1 with a 3-11 record).
2020 postseason: Lost to Pleasant Grove, 90-72, in the 6A first round.
