Bank robbery suspect arrested after 7-hour standoff with police

PROVO — A 60-year-old Springville man, who is a bank robbery suspect, was arrested Thursday after a seven-hour standoff with police at a local motel.

Dennis Craig Wing, 60, was arrested for investigation of kidnapping, aggravated assault, possession of drug paraphernalia, possession of a controlled substance, obstructing justice, interfering with an arresting officer and damage to a communication device.

The standoff occurred at the Valley Inn Motel in Provo, 1425 S. State, as police attempted to serve a search warrant at one of the hotel rooms.

Wing is a suspect in the robbery of a Key Bank in Provo on Dec. 11, and possibly recent robberies of banks in Orem and Springville, according to a probable cause affidavit.

The affidavit states Wing barricaded himself in the hotel room with his girlfriend on New Year’s Eve. Wing made multiple phone calls to Provo police stating that he was holding the woman at gunpoint and against her will.

The woman told police that Wing slapped her across the face multiple times throughout the day, controlled her actions and held her in the room against her will for more than 11 hours, according to the affidavit.

Wing “obstructed the service of the warrant for about five hours. He also actively fought and resisted arrest when SWAT officers attempted to take him into custody. Two rounds were fired at Dennis from a bean bag round in an attempt to take Dennis into custody,” the affidavit states.

Police found 3.3 grams of crystalline methamphetamine on a sink counter in the room along with multiple syringes and a soda can, according to the affidavit.

According to the court document, Wing is on federal parole.

He was ordered held without bail in the Utah County Jail, according to court records.
