Layton stays perfect in Region 1
Layton won its 11th straight game on Tuesday night, and in the process cleared its final hurdle ahead of Friday’s region championship showdown with Davis.
Facing Weber, which sat in third place in the Region 1 standings, Layton jumped out to a 33-25 halftime lead and never looked back for the 77-62 win.
“It was a great team effort tonight. Anytime you can get four players in double digits, on the road, against a good region team and get the win, it’s a good night,” said Layton coach Kelby Miller. “This group has done an amazing job of taking one game at a time and leaving all of the distractions off of the court. These young men have really bought into the team concept and trusting the process that we have at Layton High.”
Big man Ethan Potter dominated as he has most nights this year finishing with 32 points, while three other players scored in double figures.
Westlake wins another thriller for 15th straight victory
Westlake clinched at least a share of the Region 4 title on Tuesday night, beating Corner Canyon 65-63 for its 15th straight victory.
Corner Canyon had two shots late in the game to try and tie it but couldn’t convert.
The Thunder now sit at 7-0 in Region 4 play, while American Fork and Lone Peak each have three losses.
Three of Westlake’s wins have been decided by one possession.
“Keilan Torkornoo had a huge second half scoring 17 of his 21 points including three 3-pointers in the second half. Noah Madsen was great all night running the point and taking in a very difficult defensive assignment guarding Trace Ross. He also added 16 points on his birthday. Kaleb Furey had a huge steal and breakaway dunk in the final minutes to give us a late 4 point lead. A late defensive stand secured the win for the second game in a row,” said Westlake coach Nate Carling.
Cyprus freshman buries nine 3-pointers
Diego Mulford was in the zone on Tuesday night.
The Cyprus sophomore made nine 3-pointers, including eight in the first half, as Cyprus rolled past visiting Granger for the 81-51 victory.
Mulford finished the game with a new season-high 29 points as Cyprus improved to 12-8 on the season.
Olympus marches past Brighton, stays perfect in Region 6
In a battle of the top two teams in Region 6, Olympus overcame a sluggish to pull away from visiting Brighton for the 80-68 win on Tuesday night.
The Titans improved to 11-0 in Region 6 with the win, and has a two-game cushion in the standings with three games remaining.
“Very proud of my kids, especially falling behind early. The composure we showed and toughness to respond the way we did,” said Olympus coach Matt Barnes.
Brighton jumped out to a quick 9-0 lead, but Olympus responded with a 17-1 run and led 24-20 after the first quarter. It proceeded to dominate the second quarter stretching the lead to 43-26 at the break.
Jack Wistrcill led the Titans with 20 points, with Ben Krystkowiak adding 18.
Dutch Dowdell came off the bench in the second quarter and provided a big spark scoring eight of his 10 points.
Alta holds off late Mountain View push
Alta all but wrapped up a runner-up finish in Region 7 on Friday night with another tight victory.
Alta led by 11 heading into the fourth quarter, but had to stave off a fourth quarter comeback from the Bruins as it held on for the 65-63 win.
Jaden Brownell led the way for the Hawks with 20 points, with Collin Crow adding 17.
Alta now sits at 6-3 in the Region 7 standings, two games ahead of Lehi, Mountain View and Timpanogos who are all tied at 4-5.
Provo continues late season hot streak
It’s been a very bizarre season in Region 8 with multiple teams have been shut down at different times for two weeks because of COVID-19. The result now is a congested schedule to try and get everything in, but it doesn’t appear to be hurting Provo.
Provo has won three of its past four region games, including an impressive 81-77 road win at Springville on Tuesday night.
Juab Pablo Carmargo led the way with 25 points, with Isaac Castagnetto adding 23 more on three 3-pointers.
Springville’s Ryder Hansen led all scorers with 34 points.
Juab edges Manti to close in on Region 14 title
Juab jumped out to a big lead on Manti in Tuesday’s critical Region 14 showdown, and made it hold up as Juab beat Manti 50-46 to move one victory away from winning at least a share of the region title.
With Ty Allred lead the way with 21 points, and then Jakob Bailey and Brendan Allred combining for 21 more points, Juab improved to 9-1 in Region 14 play, with Manti close behind at 9-2.
Juab has two more region games remaining while Manti has one.
