Over the past several years, a growing number of BYU football fans have been wanting the program to incorporate royal blue more into the team’s official uniform scheme. The idea it would happen grew as apparel with the color was worn by head coach Kalani Sitake and others.

In recent years, the program has utilized royal jerseys, which included a royal blue oval Y and stripes on a white helmet, more often, although navy blue stayed the official primary color.

Now, royal is going on the helmet.

On Monday, the first day of spring ball, the program officially announced that it will don a royal blue lid sometime during the 2021 season. In addition, a navy blue helmet will also be reintroduced into the team’s uniform lineup.

“It’s been exciting to see the reaction of the players as we introduced these new helmets that are part of their future but based on our proud past,” Sitake said in the announcement. “BYU’s football tradition was built through many decades of success by those who wore the uniform representing the Cougars. Our players, former players, and Cougar Nation all value this great tradition of BYU football. We want the helmet and various uniform combinations to honor those who built the program and inspire those who will carry it forward.”

According to the school, BYU first wore a royal blue helmet in 1964 and the program won the WAC championship in 1965, the first conference title in program history. The Cougars returned to a while helmet in 1969 and wore it for 30 years until a navy helmet was introduced in 1999 as part of the program’s uniform overhaul that season.

BYU went back to the white helmet in 2005, and that has been its primary lid ever since (a black helmet was introduced in 2012 and is worn when the team dons black uniforms).

The school said Monday that the two new designs were developed under Sitake’s direction by a committee that included equipment manager Billy Nixon, associate athletic director David Almodova, director of football operations Jon Swift and creative services director Dave Broberg.

BYU provided a glimpse at all the different uniform combinations with the royal blue and navy blue helmets.

It is yet to be determined when the helmets will debut in 2021. Last season, players selected jersey combinations for games for the first time in program history.

“Including our student-athletes last season in deciding which uniforms to wear not only further heightened their participation with the team but also their spirit of ownership in their program,” Nixon said in the announcement.

“It was fun for the players to see how the creative process resulted in an enhanced experience for both the team and the fans. Their engagement in that process helped us develop additional uniform combinations and increased the spirit of unity throughout the program.”
