Jay Tufele fast facts

Before opting out of the 2020 season, USC Trojans defensive lineman Jay Tufele was considered a potential first-round pick in the 2021 NFL draft. Although his stock dropped, he’s very much still seen as a player who can make an impact in the league.

  • Height: 6-foot-3
  • Weight: 305 pounds
  • Hometown: Salt Lake City, Utah (Bingham High School)
  • Ran a 4.97 40-yard dash and a 7.77 3-cone drill at his pro day
  • After signing with USC in 2017, he redshirted, then played two seasons. In those two campaigns, he appeared in 25 games and tallied 65 tackles (36 solo, 29 assisted) with 7.5 sacks and a fumble recovery for a touchdown.

What they’re saying:

  • “Tufele was an explosive, hard-charging defensive lineman who flashed a complete game and made plays on the ball. He’s a potential three-technique tackle, but must add power to complete his game.” — Pro Football Network’s Tony Pauline
  • “Three-technique who parlays high energy with explosive brute strength to make his mark on the game. Tufele has average size and length, but shows a consistent ability to jostle and dislodge single blocks with leveraged strikes from either hand. He has the juice to get into the blocker’s edges and uses powerful chops to clear his pathway toward the ball. ... He could become a plus starter in the league if he can improve as a pass rusher.” — NFL.com’s Lance Zierlein
