With a strong opening day at the 4A state tournament on Wednesday, Pine View’s girls golf team put itself in a great position to try to claim its first state title in school history.
The Panthers head into Day 2 at Meadowbrook Golf Course in Taylorsville with an 18-shot lead over region foe Dixie after posting a 332 team score during Day 1. Dixie sits in second with 350 strokes, followed by Juan Diego in third with 356 and Desert Hills in fourth with 357.
Ridgeline is the defending state champ after winning the 2019 state title, and it sits in a tie for fifth place with Green Canyon at 364.
Freshman Alyssa Butterfus led the way for Pine View by shooting a 73, with teammate Hallie Wieland shooting an 80, Kenzi Owen an 84 and Katelyn Leavitt a 92. All four are positioned in the top 20 after the opening round.
Butterfus sat at 3-over after 10 holes on Wednesday, but she birdied Nos. 14 and 15 to move to 1-over for her opening round.
Butterfus is tied with Hurricane’s Ellie Johnson for second place but both are trailing Region 9 medalist Annabelle Millard by two strokes after she was the only golfer to shoot under par in the opening round.
Millard finished in fourth as a freshman, and she’ll have a two-shot lead heading into the final round after closing with back-to-back birdies on the Par 3 17th and the Par 5 18th.
