After two months of regular season golf, only one stroke separated the top two teams in 3A, with Morgan averaging a 345 and Richfield averaging a 346.
During the opening round of the state tournament on Wednesday at Mountain View Golf Course in West Jordan, Morgan shot right around its average, posting a team score of 342. It will have some work to do in the final round on Thursday, however, as Richfield posted one of its best rounds of the season.
Led by region medalist Piper Harris, Richfield recorded a 331 team score and will have a modest 11-shot lead heading into the final round as it looks for a 3-peat after winning state titles in 2018 and 2019.
Morgan’s Ellie DeMond is in the driver’s seat for medalist honors after shooting a 2-over 74 on Wednesday. Harris is three shots back at 77, with Richfield’s Becca Poulsen and San Juan’s Isabel Young tied for third after posting 79s.
A key part of Richfield’s early-round team success was Gwen Stubbs shooting an 85, five strokes better than her season average, and then Brielle Jollie posting a 90, which was six strokes better than her season average.
